HOMEWORK

Thank you for helping your children. Homework will be sent home on Mondays. If there is no school on Mondays, homework will be sent home on Tuesdays.  The children will do their English homework on Monday and Wednesday.  The Spanish homework will be done on Tuesday and Thursday.  If your child is absent over an extended period, please pick up the packet from me, ready on Mondays. We will give your child up to the following Monday to turn it in.

Our schedule this week:
Monday (English)                                        Packet with /ip/ words

Tuesday (Spanish)                                      Packet with “x”
Wednesday (English)                                 Packet with the /ip/ words

Thursday (Spanish)                                    Packet with “k” and the number 16

Friday (English)                                          Homework Due

HOMEWORK TIPS:
1.     Take out the homework packet for the week from the binder and leave it at home. The children do not need to take them to school every day until Friday, when it is time to submit the packet unless they go to after school care and you want them to do their homework there.

2.     Homework is graded on the following criteria:
a.     Correct answers
b.     Neatness
c.      Timely submission
d.     Following directions

3.     Make sure your child writes his/her full (first and last) name on the front of the packet. Please continue practicing with your child how to write their name.  We still have some who says that they are unable to do so.

4.     Use RED pencil tracing; REGULAR pencil for writing; and CRAYONS for coloring.  Do not use markers for coloring because they bleed and makes the paper look messy.

Keep the packet stapled, in the same order in which it was sent.

5.    Timely submission is part of their grade. So please be conscientious in sending your child’s homework at all times.

For every day a student is late in submitting homework, a half-point will be deducted from the grade. The student will receive a grade of zero if homework is not submitted. We will allot extra time for completion if the student was absent due to illness, family travel, or any other unusual circumstances, on a case by case basis. If, however, after the extra time, the homework is not submitted, the student will receive a grade of zero.

6.     Thank you so much for helping your child clean up his/her binder by removing finished school work that was sent home.  They are doing well in practicing their organizational skill, something they will need their whole life.

REMINDERS: UPCOMING EVENTS
1.     MASS, THURSDAY, March 22, Mater Dei High School Chapel
Please join us for our weekly mass.  Let us worship together as a community.

2.     BENCHMARK ADVANCE/ADELANTE
We started our pilot program on our Language Arts books for English and Spanish.  We will pilot the first 4 Units of the series.  It is common core aligned.  The curriculum is rigorous and the content is complex.  We will use balanced literacy working between whole group (whole class) to small groups for every lesson.  There is an essential question for each unit that goes across grade levels.  Content is taught in mini lessons with multiple context.  Students are taught to infer, consolidate and provide evidence to support their answers and opinions.  There is also trans-adaptation between the two languages to further support content learning.  Phonics and phonemic awareness is taught in conjunction with literary units. We are learning this week the different routines that are used in teaching the mini-lessons throughout the whole series.

3.     GARDEN DAY, MARCH 31
We will finally begin planting in our garden on Friday, March 31.  We had to move the day due to logistical and weather concerns.  We thought that the  weather is now suitable for planting.  Unfortunately we still have rains in the forecast.  Please check Shutterfly for our sign-up on materials and volunteers needed.

4.     VOLUNTEER HOURS
Mrs. Figueroa sent an email last week informing families of their current service hours.  We have always asked you to help us in various ways and you have always answered our call.  It is true that at the moment we do not have any consequences if the volunteer hours are not met.  However, the time, treasure and talent that you have shared with us have really made a difference in our classes.  Please do not discount the importance of your contributions.  We ask for your help because we want to give you the opportunity to come and be a part of child’s learning experience.  Children whose parents are involved in their child’s school because they are truly invested in their child’s education show tremendous growth in their self-worth.  It tells them that what they do in school truly matters.  I have seen this time and again in the many years that I have taught.  I have seen this in your children.  So please continue to be an active family in our school community not only because you want to meet the volunteer requirements but because you understand that you are the heart of our community.  We are truly grateful for all that you do.

5.     STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent.  As part of our Lenten preparation, we would like to invite you to join the Mater Dei parishioners and friends every Friday at 5:30 PM for the stations of the cross.  There will be a mass first followed by the stations after.  This will go on for all the Fridays of Lent.  Father Ven invites volunteers among those who are present to lead the readings of the different stations. This is a great way for our families to remember the Passion of Christ.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS
